Press the Play or Replay button in the Scores window, or choose New Game from the File Menu. The Game window will be brought to the front and Calculation will deal the cards. If you pressed the Play button, Calculation will first shuffle the deck; Replay allows you to retry the last shuffle in another game.
PLAYING THE GAME
You move cards between the deck, piles, and foundations by dragging them with the mouse. Position the mouse pointer on the card you wish to move, press and hold the mouse button, and move the pointer to the destination. If it is legal to move this card, this will "drag" an image of the card. When the outline of the card touches a legal destination, the destination will be highlited. Release the mouse button when the highlight appears and the card you "picked up" will move to the destination.
NOTE: When the top card of the deck has been turned up, it is the only card which can be moved.
To move a single card to the foundations, you may double-click on the card instead of dragging it. If the card may be moved to more than one foundation, a chime will sound and you must drag the card to the foundation you select.
To turn up the top card(s) in the deck, position the mouse pointer on it and click once.
If you wish to see the suits of the cards in the middle of a face-up pile, position the mouse pointer on any of those cards and press the mouse button. The pile will be expanded to fill the screen as long as you keep the button depressed.
WINDOWS
Calculation always opens two windows initially: the Game window, which contains the tableau, foundations, stock, and deck; and the Scores window, which is a dialog window for setting the number of players and their names and choosing the next player. You may move these windows freely, and Calculation will remember where you left them from one run to the next.
The Scores window is the front window initially. Use the check boxes to designate the number of players in the game, and type their names in the adjacent edit text boxes. Select the next player using the radio buttons. To start the game, press the Play or Replay button.
Press the Reset button to clear the top 10 scores displayed in the right half of the Scores window. Holding down the Option key will also clear the total game count. You may hide the Scores window by clicking in its close box, or by turning off “Show Score” in the Options Menu. Turning off “Show Score” also hides the current score in the Game window.
You may also open Help windows by selecting Help topics from the Help Menu, and Desk Accessory windows by activating Desk Accessories from the Apple Menu. Click in the window's close box to close a Help window.
Remember, these are all real Macintosh windows: you can move them around on the screen or reorder them by bringing different windows to the front. The Game window normally fills the screen, so when you bring it to the front it covers any other windows you have open (such as the Scores window). Just move it or resize it (by dragging the lower right corner) to find the desired window.
MENUS
The Apple Menu contains the usual "About Calculation…" selection, plus the desk accessories in your System.
The File Menu contains five selections: New Game, New…, Open…, Close, and Quit. When you have enabled Show Score, choosing New Game to end a game also brings the Scores window to the front. Press the Play button, or choose New Game once more, to start the next game.
New… creates a new “deck”, a document which contains your option settings, player names and face card designs. You can use a deck by choosing the Open… menu selection, or by opening it from the Finder, which will start up Calculation. Choose Close to close the current deck and return to the built-in deck.
The Edit Menu allows you to Undo the last move you made in the game. It also includes the usual Cut, Copy and Paste functions which may be useful with some Desk Accessories.
The Options Menu governs the game options: Show Score, Sound On, and Fast Deal. With later versions of the System file, the Red Suits, Card Backs and Animation menus appear as hierarchical menus on the Options Menu.
When Show Score is selected, a running score appears in the Game window during the game. If the Scores window has not been closed, it will be brought to the front at the end of each game.
When Sound On is selected (default), Calculation will play a song at the start of each game and whenever you win a game.
Fast Deal causes Calculation to deal the cards as fast as the Macintosh can draw them when selected. To play games as fast as possible, turn Fast Deal on and turn Sound off.
The Red Suits menu allows you to choose any of the standard Macintosh colors for display of the Hearts and Diamonds ("red") suit symbols, or to pick your own color from the Macintosh Color Wheel. If you do not have a color display, choose "Grey" to help you distinguish between red and black suits.
The Card Backs menu allows you to choose which color to use for the card back pattern.
The Animation menu allows you to choose which type of representation Calculation will use while dragging cards around the screen. “Full” drags a complete image of the card(s) (memory permitting); “Ghost” drags an interesting rendition of the card(s); “Outline” drags a grey outline of the card(s).
The Help Menu allows you to open Help windows for explanations of Rules, Play, or News. You are now reading the text describing Play. If you are using System 7.0 or later, the Help Menu selections appear on the System help menu at the right of the menu bar, and balloon help is also available.
